It’s Frugal Friday and I’ve got a great frugal cleaning idea for you! If you look back a few posts, you’ll see the miraculous before/after of my outdoor light fixture refinish project! Well, I had to buy some SOS pads for that project, so I decided to experiment with them and see what else they can do. How in the world did I never know SOS pads existed?!! They are the best cleaning invention since the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser! Through my experimenting I discovered a cheap & easy way to clean water stains on shower doors.
I still can’t believe I just discovered SOS pads a few weeks ago!? How could my grandparents not have told me about these miraculous things that remove rust and caked on scum with little to no effort…and they are CHEAP! I mean, box of around 20 for $1.88 cheap!
I decided to pair my SOS pad with one of my other cheap, favorite cleaning supplies…vinegar/water in a spray bottle! I keep this stuff on hand and use it daily to clean my kitchen, floors, cabinets, you name it!
Here’s what you’ll need to clean the water stains off your shower doors with very little effort and money:
That’s a vinegar/water mix in the spray bottle. I don’t measure, but do about 1/3 parts vinegar/water.
Here’s the mess of a shower door I had to work with. As you can see, covered in water stains. This cleaning job is one I dread, because it normally takes so much time and my arm hurts halfway through from scrubbing.
I’ve tried Scrubbing Bubbles and those other expensive “shower” cleaners, but none of them work fast enough or cut through well enough. We even tried a special shower wand cleaner several years ago and it didn’t work well either.
I’m normally pretty impressed with my vinegar/water, but it even has a hard time cutting through these water stains by itself.
Here’s what I did:
I sprayed my vinegar water all over the shower doors and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I used warm water with my SOS pad and started scrubbing. It worked like magic and took less than 10 minutes to clean and rinse both shower doors.
My least favorite thing about cleaning my shower doors is this annoying crack where the doors overlap. I can NEVER get in there to clean, so there’s always a streak mark of dirtiness that drives me bananas.
As you can see, the SOS pad actually fits in that crack and cleans it out!
And just for good measure, here’s the Before/After again. As a side note, my shower doors are obviously not clear glass, so test a spot on your doors if they are clear glass to ensure these SOS pads don’t cause scratch marks. My doors are textured tempered glass, so there was no scratching at all…only blissful cleanliness!
Happy Frugal Cleaning!
